Hyperfolder
Hyperfolder — Between the Dimensions
Overview
Hyperfolder is a web app for viewing three-dimensional polyhedra and four-dimensional polytopes, unfolding them, and folding them up again in paper. Turn a solid to study its shape, open it into a net to understand its structure, and print a template with glue tabs to build a real model. Its theme is observation by moving back and forth between 4D and 3D, and between 3D and 2D.
It runs entirely in the browser and works on computers, tablets and smartphones. No installation or sign-up is needed.
Features
- Polyhedron library — 76 solids, including the Platonic, Archimedean, Catalan and Johnson solids, stellations, and geodesic spheres and domes. New shapes can be built with Conway notation (e.g.
tI,sC,dkD). - 3D view — Coloring by classes of congruent faces, rotation, and an animation of the solid opening out into its net. Hovering over a face highlights the same face on the template.
- Templates — Non-overlapping nets output with glue tabs, edge numbers and mountain/valley folds. The screen uses a net chosen for symmetry; printing uses a layout chosen for paper efficiency. Export to print/PDF, SVG, DXF and OBJ.
- 4D polytopes — 20 polytopes, including the six regular polychora. 3D projections such as the Schlegel diagram, 4D rotation, an animation of the cells opening into a three-dimensional net, a 3D puzzle built from the projected cells, and a parts list for a strut model.
- Demo — A self-introduction mode that automatically shows representative examples. Add
#demoto the end of the URL and it starts as soon as the page opens.
Getting started
- Choose a shape from the list, or type a Conway notation.
- Open the solid with “Unfold”, then set the paper and size under “Paper model”.
- Print at actual size (100%) with “Print / PDF”, cut along the solid lines, fold along the dashed lines, and glue together edges with the same number.
Use the 50 mm scale bar in the template footer to check the print scale.
Release history
Version numbers take the form major.minor.patch. The major number goes up when the name or basic structure changes, the minor number when features are added, and the patch number for fixes. Dates are release dates in Japan Standard Time.
